Product Focus:

Prada Double Satin Mini-Skirt

The mini skirt. Its omnipresence appears to be part and parcel to the space-age, Y2K trend that reigns supreme in the cultural zeitgeist. With an iota of that spirit informing Prada’s SS22 collection, it contained in my estimation an approach that seemed a bit more modern. I began to examine the double satin mini skirt, Prada’s most directional product proposal for SS22, and inspect why it received so much concentration. Initially I felt there was simply an interplay between sexy and reserved. Raf notes “it’s about a language of seduction that always leads back to the body. Using these ideas, these references to historical pieces, the collection is an investigation of what they mean today.” That's when it clicked for me. Upon first glance the piece felt reserved, modest, maybe even shy. My imagination was captured upon further investigation as the appearance of the trailing satin extensions suspended behind the model became salient. My original position was now put into question. The trail added a tantalizing element, it unified elegance and created a sensation of something a bit more suggestive, a sort of “sexual elegance” . An item that denounces grace in appearance yet was intimate, subversive, and defiant (Reminds me of someone I know). Prada’s use of familiar tropes of femininity, womanhood, and seduction coalesced into a readable product. The mini-skirt re-examine, in hopes to be redefined. What is sexy? What is elegant? Do they have to be in different camps? Can an item so subtly reconcile both forces?
